I’ve been wondering the same thing. My play staying power is not what it used to be. I remember spending the entire day behind the couch with hot wheel cars. I now sometimes start clock watching after 15 minutes. Meanwhile, my only creative thoughts are for things to do with Penny… not things for my own interests. I’m sure they’ll return. I can’t wait for next summer and to meet your son!

Christy, I can’t wait to see the girls all play together next year in Colorado. Child imaginations put me to shame. Why do we lose so much creativity as we grow?

My flowers get picked as soon as they bloom. Ants find the food under the couch. The stick pile grows bigger as some sort of “feature” on our front porch. The DVDs have goo on them and skip. The outside lights are on in the middle of the day. A lipstick has disturbingly gone missing. Books go unread. Bath salts go unused and the “good clothes” hang in the closet. Many of my interests were on hold, but they are coming back slowly and besides I’m too busy making jet packs, fairy houses, treasure maps, and sand stir-fry. I wouldn’t trade this with anyone. We are so blessed to be able to stay at home as most people I know cannot. School will start in earnest for us in just over a year and I know it will pass fast. I love my little wonder and she is perfect.

Amen to all of it. You put it all in perspective and are such a FABULOUS writer. I have sometimes joked with my husband that we should switch places for a day. We chuckle, then quickly agree that neither of us could do the other job. The days are long but the years are short. So very very short. Let’s enjoy the moments more than ever!

But I often think about how highly teachers are valued, despite meager pay and the sometimes inadequate conditions in which they are expected to do their job. And what is a mother if not a teacher? We teach everything from the most basic human functions (e.g. potty training) as well as help to form the character and moral basis that our kids will rely on to make the choices that will shape the rest of their lives. I completely agree that as moms, we need all the hours the day can provide in order to do our children the service they deserve. And sometimes that doesn’t even feel like enough time. While I don’t see anything wrong with working moms, I know that it isn’t for me. Like you said, this is a season in our lives, and I know that even the longest, most tiresome days spent with my kids are passing way to quickly. Great post!

I know that wasn’t your intention but once in my idealistic early twenties I would have said I wanted to do both. However, the longer it takes for me to meet the man I will eventually have kids with I know that my heart will be to spend as much time with my children.
